


TORCON is meant to make you aware of heighened tornado possibilities, not guarantee a tornado. But that means that there is a 60% chance of there NOT being a tornado within 50 miles. Means that there is a 40% chance – in my opinion – of a tornado within 50 miles. On a scale of 0 to 10, a specific region is given a number, with higher numbers indicating a higher risk of a tornado within 50 miles of the given location. TORCON stands for Tornado Condition Index.

A warning means that a tornado was spotted either in person or on the weather radar, and the risk is imminent.īelow we hope to answer some of the questions you might have. The term was developed by a Weather Channel weather expert Greg Forbes. TORCON isn’t an official weather term that the National Weather Service (NWS) or National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration use. Forbes assigns TOR:CON values by studying the same model data that the Storm Prediction Center (and every other meteorologist) uses to write their own forecasts, but generalizing it to a fairly accurate 0-10 scale is an incredibly useful way to get the word out in a way people will comprehend and use to take action.
